Konfident Kruisin' Kanines

A class that is based entirely on "Control Unleashed: Creating a Focused and Confident Dog" by Leslie McDevitt
I am very excited to be able to offer a program known as, “Control Unleashed”. This program was developed by Leslie McDevitt. To fully benefit from this program all students wishing to take the class MUST purchase the book, “Control Unleashed” by Leslie McDevitt. It is available via the internet from http://www.cleanrun.com/index.cfm or http://www.dogwise.com/index.cfm. If you don’t believe your copy will be available before your class starts, copies will be available at the first class to purchase at our cost plus shipping charges that may apply.

The program will be limited to six teams. The class will run for 7 weeks. It will be on Monday evening at 8:15PM and will last at least one hour. Cost of the program will be $90.00, plus the cost of a copy of “Control Unleashed: Creating a Focused and Confident Dog”. With this course limited to six teams I will not be accepting teams on a first come/first serve basis. I will make up the class with a mix of teams that will be able to learn together in a class environment. If I am not familiar with you or your dog, we will need to meet and do a short evaluation. I will maintain a wait list for those who have contacted me about the program.

As described in “Control Unleashed”, this is a program for “friendly dogs whose owners want a sports foundation class or want to work on focus around other dogs.”

What is a typical description of a dog who would benefit from “Control Unleashed”? Well, the answer can be found in “Control Unleashed” as follows:

“The appropriate types of dogs for learning in a group situation are at the low end of the stimulation continuum.

Typical low-end behaviors (appropriate for a CU class)
• Dog gets sniffy (very often, but not always, a stress displacement activity).
• Dog wanders away on course.
• Dog is environmentally oriented out of mild concern or normal interest (knowing which is which, is important).
• Dog’s mind drifts off easily.
• Dog listens to his handler but his body language continually shows that he feels stress (for example, the dog yawns, licks his lips, scratches as a displacement behavior not because he’s itchy, “shakes it off”, or doesn’t want look directly at his handler).
• Dog barks and/or pulls and lunges at dogs and objects he is uncertain about but can be interrupted before having a reactive response, or he recovers quickly from a response and continues working.
• Dog is mildly responsive to sudden environmental changes (such as a falling chair or a person entering the far end of the room) but recovers quickly.

Typical high-end behaviors (inappropriate for a CU class)
• Dog is hypervigilant (can’t stop scanning and worrying about everything in his environment) and extremely responsive to sudden environmental changes.
• Dog has low arousal threshold (as in a “hair-trigger dog” that is always ready to go off).
• Dog cannot easily or quickly recover from a stressful event.
• Dog barks almost nonstop and pulls/lunges so forcefully at dogs or unfamiliar objects that his handler is in danger of dropping his leash, being pulled off her feet, or being injured.”

Dogs at the higher end need private behavioral training.” This type of training is not offered within our training program.
